How to reset Motorola Assist?

Update: If Motorola Assist does not read messages in home or driving mode (i.e.. it does not respond to your voice)  after it asks you say Listen, please follow this guide to fix it.

Motorola Assist is one of the flagship features in Moto X.  It normally works ass expected.

But occasionally, weird thing may happen to the Assist.  If you find something unusual, for example, your Moto X refuses to read incoming caller name when you are driving. All settings are correct.

In this scenario, a simply reset of Motorola Assist can save you a visit to the service center.

To get the  fresh settings for Motorola Assist, you can get to Settings–Apps (aka Application manager)-Motorola Assist  to clear data and clear the cache. However, for Moto X, you need do this for 4 apps:

  1. Motorola Assist
  2. Motorola Assist Engine
  3. Motorola Assist Framework
  4. Motorola Assist Talk To Me

After resetting, your Motorola Assist should work if your settings are correct.

If you still have problems with your Motorola Assist in your Moto X, you may let us know in the comment box below, or start a thread in Moto X Forum.

if the reset does not work, you may try to backup your data and do a factory reset. Sometimes, a reboot may solve the issue as well.

My moto x does not have moto assist engine or moto assist talk to me. I’m having trouble with the assist not turning on occasionally. I’ve cleared cache and data on the other two apps. The only thing that fixes is a power off. But it’s only a temporary fix. It goes back to being intermittent sometimes works, sometimes doesn’t.

You can open the Motorola assist app, then uncheck everything for driving, meeting, and sleeping.

Reset will give you the default settings, not disable it.

If you really want to disable it, you can just disable Motorola Assist (not necessary to disable the others), not reset.

No, it does not need data. But if you are using the phone for navigation, you may use some data for the map.

I’ve been through this and I found that there are currently only 2 apps installed, Assist and Assist Framework, I don’t have the engine nor the talktome. Additionally the option to clear the cache for Assist framework isn’t active so that isn’t possible. Ive uninstalled and reinstalled, turned my phone off over night nothing works. The home icon no longer displays in notification tray, and the options to read to me only work while away from home. What do I need to do to fix this?

If the problem persists, you may backup your phone and perform a factory data reset.

Assist comes up with home and driving turned on, but talk to me doesn’t show me or read me the text. The screen has text on it that says “say listen” and saying listen doesn’t respond. I’ve tried clearing the data/cache on both assist apps in settings, reboot the phone, and no luck. I turned on the same settings on my wife’s moto x phone, and her phone quotes the messages. The talk to me feature has never worked on my moto x phone yet. Any suggestions, beyond doing a factory restore?

My Moto x used to work great, reading my texts while driving, then I had exact same issue. Worked again when I switched to the alternate channel option as mentioned on this page, but then stopped working again. Tired of fussing with it now, and gave up. People will just have to wait for my texts.

I have a Droid Ultra and while Moto Assist works perfectly for calls it doesn’t work at all for texts. When a text message comes in it announces who its from and asks what I want to do…but then it skips the function of it listening to me and says its couldn’t hear me and asks me to respond again….then a millisecond later it says sorry I can’t understand you lets talk later. So I know a text came in…I know who its from…but it never allows me time to respond to any of its voice command prompts. Thoughts? Again it is only doing this for texts…phone call it works fine which is why its so strange.

I think several Verizon users reported similar issues. Probably, it’s due to some bugs in the Verizon version firmware.

Assist just will not silence my phone during meetings from my corp exchange server. I see the meetings on my Motorola’s calendar. If I set the meeting up in Google, then it works fine. I have both calendars selected to use under Assist Settings. I’ve tried clearing the cache on the app, restarting phone and selecting different calendars to use. Anybody? Such a nice feature…if only it worked.

I think the Exchange server settings are probably the cause. Anyway, the requirement for a “qualified” event:

is from a calendar visible on device
is from a calendar that you are the owner
          has been accepted
          is not deleted
          is not cancelled
is not all day (all day event box checked) or duration < 24
has one or more guest attendees

        Hi All,

I was having issues with my Moto text to speech, and I tried all of the steps listed above with no success as well. Then I realized this morning that my Moto G TTS is driven by Google, not Moto.

        I took the following steps:
        1. Settings
        2. Apps
        3. Google Text-to-speech Engine
        4. Clear Data

Now it works again. Hope this helps!

I think it’s a conflict of stored data. The program saves data based off of you interaction of the program. Then one day an action conflicts a pervious action and it can’t self resolve, so it stops working.

You just need reset the assist (Motorola Assist Framework is under all, but normally it is not necessary to reset it).

For the meeting, there are some requirements:
is from a calendar visible on device
is from a calendar that you are the owner
      has been accepted
      is not deleted
      is not cancelled
is not all day (all day event box checked) or duration < 24 has one or more guest attendees It may not work well with exchange accounts.

The problem is caused by Google app. Before Motorola releases an update for Assist, you have to uninstall the update for Google app. You can do this in Play store, search for Google, then tap uninstall. It will then ask you to uninstall all updates, choose yes.

I sit in a quiet open plan office and no matter what I do (even setting the phone to give no interruptions) it still stouts out that I have a new text message or the I have an incoming call. I have tried clearing the app data and have even turned the feature off but it still keeps going. Does anyone have any bright ideas, as I am considering selling the moto x and going back to a Samsung.

No way… I have the same thing. It’s super annoying. It talks to me at work and says who’s calling and sends me texts. Normally it will only talk to me while driving or when at home. Now the home icon won’t show up in the upper taskbar.
I’ve tried to clear the cache as suggested above, but no. I’ve set the work location right and everything. But also there’s no icon for being at work. When I’m driving or when it’s my ‘nighttime’ it does show it in the taskbar. Or when I’m in a meeting, but it still will talk.

The only solution I have found is to completely disable moto assist all together and then I switch my phone to flight mode when I go to bed so the alarm still sounds but I do not get disturbed by calls/texts/emails, etc.
It’s far from ideal and a little disappointing as I really liked the assist features when they worked, but I don’t know what else to do…..

Wait a few mins. Connect the phone to the charger. If the phone cannot be charged, you have to visit the service center to check the hardware.

I have the Moto X 2, & I really used to love Motor Assist now I hate it and I have considered going iPhone because of how crappy it works with the last to Android updates. If things do not improve with marshmallow, this will be my last Motorola oh, & I have had Motorola phones since 2007. It turns my ringer off for no apparent reason and it turns it on for no apparent reason it changes it to priority when it should be all. & I don’t have the granularity of setting the quiet settings that I once had with Kit Kat.

Actually Motorola assist works best on lollipop. There are no known problems of Motorola Assist in Moto X.

FYI, Motorola Assist will not be available n Marshmallow update. Motorola already announced the retirement of some apps in the coming Marshmallow update.

My Moto X Pure has stopped detecting Driving mode Before it used to show the Driving road symbol and also was performing voice prompts properly while driving. Now the Driving symbol does not show up and as a result neither does the Voice under Moto Assist activate while driving. Under Moto Assist Driving is enabled. Please assist. Thanks

Ok guys (and for Hassan Maje), same problem here. I’ve bought a Moto X (2° gen – 2014) a week ago. I’ve discovered that if i make the update to last android version (or some apps from google, i’m still not sure) Motorola Assist stops to work. So, for who have problem with Moto Assist i can just suggest to NOT UPDATE to last android version or google app. This will probably save you from this bug. I’ve tried to download a new version of Motorola Assist app from Google Play, but says that my phone is not compatible with that app (INSANE). THANK YOU MOTOROLA…

My previous problem on my Moto X Pure with Driving mode not kicking in while driving was due to ‘Location’ not switched on while driving I think. After swiping down from top and taping on Location symbol, Driving mode worked as expected.

However, now I have upgraded to Android 6.0 and I have the following problems:

      1) Under Moto Assist, I can’t find Driving (although it kicks in when driving), Meeting and Sleep (will know if it kicks in at night!). I tried scheduling a Meeting under calendar and notice that during the meeting times auto reply text does not work and phone rings (i.e. there is interruption).

      2) The Dialer seems to have changed. I can’t find the recent phone number which previously in Android Lollipop was visible at the top for fast dialing the last number.

Please assist if anyone has suggestions.

      Thanks

Thank you for the update. Moto Assist was retired in Marshmallow update. You have to use Marshmallow features and some third party apps to achieve what you want to do.

For the dialer, you can always use the call log tab to get recent incoming and outgoing calls.

Oh, if you have made the updates (to last android version or some google apps), just reset the phone to factory presets.

Not sure about your problem. If everything (including Google services) is up to date, there should be no issues. You may try to clear cache partition to see whether it helps.

I restored the phone to the factory presets for 5 times. After that, Moto X has updated automatically everything. The bug is clear and probably it’s because Motorola is going to abandon Moto Assist in the next Android update: Marshmallow…

Although Motorola Assist will be no longer available in Marshmallow, there are no known issues of Motorola Assist in lollipop 5.0 and 5.1.

After the factory reset, you may try no to restore third party apps to see whether it helps.

I don’t update anything after factory reset, and it works (as i said yesterday). It’s really BAD that Motorola Assist will be no longer available in Marshmallow… someone knows why?

Moto Assist is unable to tell me how much time it may take me to reach my destination. Previously it used to do this. Currently it only tells me something like …”there is heavy traffic on your way to….” Then there will be a map displayed on browser with estimated time and distance. Location settings have been enabled. Driving mode would be on and Driving symbol would appear fine. Please assist. Thanks
