Motorola Skip is an optional accessory to unlock your Moto X quickly through trusted NFC without using the password, PIN, or the pattern.
In the Motorola Skip package (which costs you $19.99 from Motorola online store), you can find one Skip (i.e., a clip) and three Skip dots (i.e., stickers). Normally, you can carry the clip, and put the stickers in three different locations (e..g, car, desk..). This makes it possible to use the Skip whenever you want. Moto X can use up to 5 Motorola Skips or Skip dots.
Because Motorola Skip replies on NFC, you must make sure that NFC in your Moto X is enabled when you plan to use Motorola Skip. You can check NFC settings through Settings–More…—NFC.
The setup is fairly simple.
- Unlock your Moto X
- Make sure NFC is enabled
- In Google Play store, find the Motorola Skip Setup app ( https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.motorola.nfcauthenticator)
- Install this app
- Tap the back of Moto X to either Motorola Skip or any one of the Skip Dots
- Open (start) this newly installed app (Motorola Skip Setup)
- Follow the on-screen instructions
For the first activation, you will be prompted to re-enter your existing PIN and to set a master PIN. For the remaining activations, you just need to tap to activate.
To use the Skip, you just need pair it with your Moto X once.
You can manage all paired Skips from Settings–Security–Manage NFC Unlock.

Todd says
Does the Skip work with a case on my Moto X?
simon says
if it is plastic (no metal), it normally should work.
David says
There is no popup screen when I touch the devices. Play store says the app is already installed. NFC is unlocked. How do I start the pre-installed Motorola Skip Setup app? It’s not in the list.
simon says
Go to Settings–Apps, Flick left to ALL. You should be able to find the app there. Tap it and choose clear data, then try again . Sometimes rebooting Moto X can also solve such an issue.
David says
Thanks. I can see the app there. Cleared the cache, rebooted. No change, no popups when touching the devices, still doesn’t work.
simon says
Then you probably have to call Motorola support. It could be hardware issue, if all settings are correct.
Robert says
Try changing the way you unlock your phone, under the security settings. When choosing how to unlock, choose NFC and that will bring you to the set up process.
marie raney says
I have all the same issues (moti x won’t respond to skip) and NFC unlock is greyed out, disabled by administrator. How do I allow this?
simon says
Did you have vpn or exchange email accounts in your Moto X?
Frances says
Yes I do have exchange email account… The set up asks to choose a device.. I see the device on the list but it is grayed out..
simon says
Then, the NFC unlock does not work with you. The exchange server demands a lot including how you can unlock the device.
If you don’t use the calendar or other exchange features (and use it just for email), you can set it as a pop3 or imap email account, which does not require special unlock methods.
ganesh says
it will work on moto E?
simon says
No, Motorola skip need NFC, which is not available in Moto E.
Chariss says
My daughter recently reset my phone. How do I get Moto skip to work again? Apps all only shows force stop and disable for moto skip app.
Thank you
Chariss says
Never mind. I couldn’t find the NFC unlock at first.
simon says
You have to setup Motorola skip again.
Dennis says
Why do you tell us it doesn’t work with exchange after we buy it. So pretty much i have a $15 useless magnet. Freaking idiots.
BRANDON says
Does this work with the new moto x?
simon says
Yes, it works with both generations of Moto X.
dondrey says
I just got the new moto x, so this will work with it? why does the website specify (1st gen only)
simon says
No, it works only with the first gen. I had thought it worked with 2nd gen, but it didn’t. I was wrong on this.
Motorola haven’t given any explanation on this except stating this in the order page now.
Ariel says
The Motorola skip was working great until I updated the software to lollipop and it just stopped working. How do I fix this?
Sam says
Set it up as a trusted device in smart lock.
First go to Settings->security->advanced-> trust agent->enable smart lock, then go back to security and the option will be there now.
From smart lock you can add your skip dots
Hope that helps
